Violet is a pretty, clever, sarcastic and somewhat moody teenager. She is described by her mother as being fearless, and she seems to be very brave. She takes an instant liking to the macabre house, and it is her vocal positive opinion that leads the Harmons to buying the haunted abode.
Violet is a bit of a loner who doesn't always fit in with her peers. She has a somewhat unusual way of dressing, verging on hipster, with lots of hats, cardigans, and long skirts. She smokes. She always speaks her mind despite the consequences. We see that she is a cutter. She cuts her wrist in shallow slashes with her dad's razor blades in the bathroom, without even locking the door. Possibly she wants to be caught, but her parents are so overwhelmed that they don't notice the problem. She feels ignored by her family, and says that they give more love to the dog, although that is largely sarcasm.
It is unclear why Violet suddenly liked the house. When she first saw it, she shrank away from it, and said it looked like where the Addams Family lived. Her dad had to talk her into going inside. While inside she does not seem impressed. At her mother's request, Violet goes to find the dog, who is barking fearfully at something outside the view of the audience. She discovers a rusty door that leads to the basement. When she comes back into the living room, she is smiling - something she rarely does - and, as the real estate lady tells them about the gruesome murder suicide committed in the house by the last owners (as is required by law for disclosure), her smile gets bigger. Then Violet asks where the murder took place. Upon finding out it took place in the basement, she loudly says "We'll take it!" This greatly surprises everyone.
Violet immediately has trouble with some tough older girls in her new school.
She becomes friends with a patient of her father named Tate. The boy has violent fantasies and seems to be very dangerous and psychotic. Unaware of just how unstable Tate is, she ignores her father's shock and horror when he finds out that the two of them talk and socialize. In fact, her father's command to stop seeing Tate just makes her more determined to see him.
However, Tate's way of putting a scare into Violet's high school bully, via a bizarre scene in the basement, causes an unease between the two. Later, when intruders invade the Harmon home, it is Tate who devises a way to rid the house of them, which improves Violet's view of him.
On Halloween, she agrees to go on a date with him where they soon are interrupted by a group of teens from Tate's past. The couple leave, only to be followed to the Harmon home. When Tate leads them away, Violet is taken by Constance to her house, who tells her that Tate and Adelaide are siblings.
